Cookies and storage

This website sets no cookies of its own and loads no fonts, scripts or images from third-party services. We count visits, with a tool that stores nothing on your device. Nothing here follows you from one site to another and nothing profiles you, so there is no consent banner to dismiss.

The law here is wider than cookies. Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations covers anything stored on your device or read back from it. There is one such thing of ours on this site, one check our measurement tool makes, and one thing our hosting provider may add in rare cases. All three are set out below.

What that means in practice

• No advertising or profiling cookies.
• No measurement beyond counting visits, which stores nothing on your device.
• No social media buttons or embedded players.
• Typefaces are served from this domain, not from a font provider.
• Images are served from this domain.
• The browser's own advertising interfaces, including the Topics API, are switched off by a header this site sends with every page. That one is enforced by your browser rather than left to us.

The one thing we store

If you press the light and dark control in the header, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the name gofusion-theme. It exists so the site opens the way you left it.

It holds one word, either light or dark. It is not a cookie, is never sent to us or to anyone else, cannot identify you, and stays on your device until you clear your browsing data. If you never press the control, nothing is stored and the site simply follows whatever your device already prefers.

No consent is required for this. Storage whose only purpose is to remember how you want a service to appear is exempt under regulation 6. We tell you about it because the exemption covers consent, not disclosure.

How we count visits

We use Vercel Web Analytics, a measurement service run by our hosting provider, to see how many people visit, which pages they read and how they found the site. Its script is served from this domain, and what it records is sent back to this domain. Vercel describes it in its own privacy documentation.

For each page you open it records the page, the site that sent you here if there was one, the country and city your connection comes from, and the type of device, operating system and browser you are using. None of it is stored with your IP address or with anything else that identifies you. To count you once rather than once per page, Vercel derives a code from the request your browser sends and discards it after 24 hours, so nothing links one day's visit to the next.

It sets no cookie and writes nothing to your device. It does make one check: it looks in your browser's local storage for an entry named __va_attribution, which it would use to recognise a signed-in user. This site has no sign-in and never creates that entry, so the check always finds it empty.

Vercel keeps what it records for at least twelve months, and may keep it longer. We see only totals. If you would rather not be counted, most content blockers stop the script, and the site works exactly the same without it.

Your browser may still store things of its own

Your browser keeps its own cache of pages and images so the site loads faster on a return visit. That is held on your device, is not readable by us, and can be cleared through your browser settings at any time.

One part of that is worth naming, because it is the longest. The photographs on our articles are sent with instructions to keep them for up to a year. Each one has its own address that changes whenever the picture does, so keeping the old one costs you nothing and saves loading it again. It is still your browser's own cache: it holds pictures, not anything about you, and clearing your browsing data removes it.

What happens when you send an enquiry

The contact form is handled by a third party, so submitting it sends what you typed to them as well as to us. Nothing is stored on your device by that process, which is why it is mentioned here rather than only in the privacy notice: this page is about storage, and sending an enquiry involves none. Who they are and what they do with it is set out in the privacy notice.

A security check you may occasionally see

Our hosting provider, Vercel, protects the site from automated attacks. If it suspects a visit is automated, which is rare and more likely on a shared network or a VPN, it shows a brief page headed “Vercel Security Checkpoint” that your browser completes by itself. Once it has, your browser keeps a record that it passed for one hour, so the check is not repeated on every page.

That record is set by Vercel, only for visitors it checks, and only for security. We do not read it or use it for anything. Because it is strictly necessary to protect the service you asked for, it does not need consent under regulation 6, and we tell you about it for the same reason we name the preference above.

Server logs

Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which may include IP addresses, for security and to keep the service running. These are not used to identify individuals, and Vercel keeps them for one day.

If this changes
